Getting out from behind the desk

We recently filmed a music video here in Nashville. Not my usual scene. I’m an engineer and entrepreneur who just happens to play bass.

That “we” is The Feral Toms — our band, born in a home studio. Now we were taking it to the screen. Again, not my usual scene. I’m most comfortable in front of a DAW, moving faders and twisting knobs — not worrying about what my face is doing.

We do everything ourselves — write, record, mix, promote — under the name Fat Cat Mixing. That’s the business. My happy place. Who I am.

What’s your identity? Whether you’re producing music or running a local bakery, you probably have an elevator pitch ready for small talk. But are those your limits?

I didn’t realize I needed this until the director hit record. Suddenly, I was getting lost in the music — connecting in the way we hope for when we’re mixing or producing. The kind of connection that leads to inspired work.

This year has been transformative — taking The Feral Toms public, stepping into discomfort, and growing because of it. There’s no substitute. It was time to get out from behind the desk — and I’m glad I did.
